Description
A few words about its great manufacturer:
George Stebbing was an optician and instrument maker, specializing in nautical instruments. He was educated in London, but when he became famous in 1800 he moved to Portsmough. Stebbing was recognized by the Admiralty as a manufacturer of high quality marine instruments. In 1834, the Royal Navy captain of HMS Aetna, a survey vessel, reportedly refused to go to sea without Stebbing repairing the ship's nautical instruments. Stebbing patented several modifications to compasses and binoculars and accepted a royal appointment as optician to the Duchess of Kent.
